To make beautiful lawn growth to its full potential you should split the amount of fertilizer into 3 to 5 sections a year.
Everyone love beautiful lawns, specially if they are super green and in your own backyard. It is like food for the eyes giving you a nice peaceful feeling as you scan your eyes throw it. The magic that makes it happen is good nutrition on a regular basics.
As the grass grows the soil provides nutrients naturally but it is incapable of providing them as fast as needed or in the amount it is needed.
This is when a good fertilizer program comes into place. The perfect fertilizer program will provide nutrients in a uniform growth throughout the year. Most of the fertilizer have the important details for you on the label.
Of course the lawn will survive without fertilizer, but the less fertilizer your lawn receive the more it will deteriorates. You know what I mean. We all have seen those brown spots where the grass has began to deteriorate until it dies.
This are the steps of your dying lawn:
1- The beautiful healthy bright color green will change and gets pale.
2- With the time the lawn gets thin.
3- Weeds will now move in.
4- Diseases and insects will follow and after damage is done it cannot outgrow.
Note: Do not over fertilize the lawn. Doing so will makes the roots thin and the lawn will not be able to handle the heat.
How much fertilizer and when depends on what kind of lawn is yours. If you live in a cool area you will need to fertilize anywhere from 3 to 5 times a year. If you live in a warm area you will have to add another feeding. Let say 6 times a year. Don't forget lawns with very sandy soil may need more frequent feedings. Try to feed your lawn when it's actively growing. Cool season lawn grows the most during spring and fall. During summer it will slow down while it does waits for the heat to go. The biggest feeding should be at the end of the summer, leaving small snacks during spring.
The growing for lawns in a warm area is the opposite to the cool areas. You should feed small meals during summer. Best moment to feed will be after mowing because you know the grass is growing.
When to do the first fertilizer?
This will depend where do you live. For example if you live in Texas the first feeding should be in March but if you live in North Dakota the first feeding should be at the end of April.
