What is cervical cancer?
Is cancer of the cervix (the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vaginal). Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). When a female becomes infected with certain types of HPV and the virus doesn't go away on its own, abnormal cells can develop in the lining of the cervix. If not discovered early and treated, these abnormal cells can become cervical precancers and then cancer.
Now you can do something about it with a vaccine called GARDASIL. It is for girls between 9 to 26 years old. Protect your daughter against cervical cancer. GARDASIL may help guard against diseases caused by HPV types 16 and 18, which cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV types 6 and 11, which causes 90% of genital warts cases.
Ask your doctor or healthcare professional.
How it is given?
It is given as 3 injections over 6 months.
- First dose: at a date you and your daughter's doctor choose.
- Second dose: 2 months after the first dose.
- Third dose: 6 month after the first dose.
If your daughter doctor's decides GARDASIL is right for her, make sure she gets all 3 doses. This will allow her to get the full benefits of it.
How do people get HPV?
HPV is easily transmitted. Anyone who has any kind of sexual activity involving genital contact with an infected person can get HPV (intercourse isn't necessary). Many people who have HPV may not show any signs or symptoms, so they can pass the virus on without even knowing it.
Vaccination with GARDASIL does not take the place of regular Pap tests. Your daughter's doctor can tell you when the first Pap test should be.
