On Top of the Nose

Nose piercing have been common in many diverse cultures. In recent years, many modern men and women have adopted the fashion. Two basic types of jewelry are used for this piercing: Rings and studs. Placement and technique is crucial, as is proper jewelry. Never allow the piercing of the nose with an ear piercing gun, or install an earring stud into a nostril piercing.

Between Nose Orifices

Most piercing enthusiasts are able to survive in an unsympathetic world only because the piercing is not visible to the majority of people. For this reason an obvious piercing such as that would be impossible.

Eyebrow

This has become one of the more common piercing today. Rings of 20, 18 or 16 gauge are used for this piercing. Normally placed so that the jewelry appears to wrap around the eyebrow.

Lips

Piercing of the lip and cheek have become common place in many cultures around the world. Piercing can be placed anywhere along the length of the tow lips.

This piercing can be done at various spots along the center of the tongue. It heals very quickly and is one of the most painful

piercing. Barbell studs should be used for the piercing. The jewelry must be exactly the right size. So proper measurement is crucial. The barbell should be at least 1/4" to 5/16" larger when the tongue is at its thickest. Some swelling is to be expected after the piercing. Eating soft foods may be necessary during the healing process. Some people prefer to remove the ring to eat and put it back after done.

Labret

This piercing is done through the middle of the lower lip.

Belly

Usually the skin directly above the belly is pierced. This is a particularly difficult piercing to heal and retain. It requires a great deal of dedication as it can easily become irritated by belts, waistbands and even sitting or bending. Rings are recommended for the initial piercing; while after the piercing is healed an "L" bar can be worn.

Nipple

Piercing of the nipples has become increasingly popular in recent years. Next to the ears this has become the second most common body part to be pierced. It was in vogue in France during the reign of Louis XIV and in England during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Nipples are usually pierced horizontally, but can be pierced vertically or even diagonally. Care in placement is very important. Placement for piercing should be done while standing. Any type of ring can be worn for the initial piercing; however barbells should not be worn until the piercing is healed. General aftercare is very important as it is with all piercing.

Choosing a professional piercer

When choosing a professional body piercer there are certain precautions that should not be over looked.

1. Cleanliness - same type of sterility that a doctor or dentist ensures should be practiced by the body piercer.
2. The piercer should be knowledgeable about piercing.
3. The piercer should not be using an ear gun on anything but earlobes.
4. The piercer must use disposable latex gloves
5. needles are sterilized and for single use only: disposed of into a "sharps" container.
6. Jewelry and needle should be of the same gauge
7. Jewelry should be made of surgical stainless steel, niobium or an appropriate hypo-allergenic material.
8. Area to be pierced should be prepped with an antiseptic solution
9. Aftercare instructions should be given orally as well as in writing
